Never too late for number Ten

What the ... ?

NASA has discovered the tenth planet of our solar system!
"2003UB313" is larger than Pluto!
The planet is a typical member of the Kuiper belt, but its sheer size in relation to the nine known planets means that it can only be classified as a planet, Brown said. Currently about 97 times further from the sun than the Earth, the planet is the farthest-known object in the solar system, and the third brightest of the Kuiper belt objects.
Pictures were first taken in 2003 but the planet was not discovered until January 2005. Click around the press release, or Mission News, to view the video of the narrated overview.

Zoom!

A group of German artists have joined to create the collaborative ZoomQuilt.org.

Go here to view the finished product, but also check out the puzzle pieces behind the magic.

The project is fantastic. Not too techie, with a lot of old-school ingenuity. Best of all, they've really considered usability testing. That's geek-speak for having flash, html, and screensaver versions.

What Does That Mean?

Just like everyone's favorite Wikipedia, What Does That Mean ? is reader-built.

Tagline is "Many cultures separated by a common language".

There are terms from most English speaking countries like: Stickybeak from Australia, Riggwelted from England, or Hundreds from South Africa. Please be aware. Given the reader-built premise, the site has not only fun terms like Fuhgeddaboudit and Double Double, but also lewd ones like Happy Trail or MILF.

m.i. visited the Brooklyn Diner this weekend (sorta a Diner, but not in Brooklyn), and was reminded of the best reasons to sit in a booth. You know what I'm talking about...
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 scoop chocolate ice cream
  • 1 scoop coffee ice cream
Blend until smooth.
Serve immediately.

Street Art : REVS

Most New Yorkers are familiar with REVS and COST's work on walls and roofs in the early 1990's. They inspired a new generation of artists by playing with originality and legality. But after COST's arrest, REVS had gone into hiding.

Recently, REVS has gloriously reappeared in Manhattan and the closest parts of the Boroughs. The fundamental ideas of art without payment and without permission has morphed into outdoor scultures, sometimes commissioned by the buildings' owners.

He has now attained pop-icon status.

Blogs, photoblogs, Flickr, dedications, and even the New York Times rave about REVS.

Don't miss the NYTimes' audio slide show, A Graffiti Artist’s Return.
"Randy Kennedy discusses the appearance of sculpture on city streets by the legendary graffiti artist known as Revs."

REVS wrote the text in Autograf: New York City's Graffiti Writers, and is featured in a number of other recent books: Broken Windows: Graffiti NYC, and The Graffiti Subculture: Youth, Masculinity and Identity in London and New York

NINEAEM

Photography magazine NINEAEM is short and simple. But that is where the use of cliches for the brainchild of the French editor Pep Karston ends. The slight text, the composed music, and the context of the series reframes images for the viewer.

Read their work online.
The latest issue is Comme un ange, the previous is Meet the Divinities

Brava Diva

July 14, 2005- Amanda McKerrow, principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, performed for the last time with ABT after 23 years with the company. She was a beautiful Giselle, believable as a charming, heart-sick girl and as an ethereal Wili, still in love with Albrecht. Surrounding her, was a stellar cast: Ethan danced brilliantly and passionately as Albrecht, creating a character more love-struck man than philandering aristocrat; Sascha Radetsky looked great in the role of Hilarion, usually a dumpy character, but quite attractive and beautiful in this performance; Gillian Murphy was a stunning Myrta; Michele Wiles was an elegant Moyna; and Herman Cornejo was quite the crowd pleaser in the Peasant Pas de Deux.

At the evening's end, the dancers in the corps de ballet each presented Amanda with a single white rose, bouquets were presented by the ABT men, Artistic Director, Kevin McKenzie, and her husband, John Gardner. The audience applause demanded many curtain calls, and admiring fans threw flowers across the orchestra pit.

Amanda McKerrow began her career at the Washington Ballet. She was the first American to win the gold medal at the Moscow International Ballet Competition (1981), and joined ABT in 1982 with then director, Mikhail Baryshnikov. She will be much missed by New York audiences.

Street Art : Julian Beever

Some of the most interesting work out there is done without expected payment. That's what makes street art and graffiti so inspiring.
Perhaps everyone else has already seen this particular artist's work, but Julian Beever's illusions are quite the pop phenomenon.

The one below is call "Pre-modernist and Post-modernist".

More pavement drawings [1] [2] and blog entries [MAKE] [MindHack].

So some of his pieces are commissioned, and he takes pride in his public image (unlike the secret identity of graffiti artist), but Julian Beever is definitely a street artist in the sense that: his work is not curated, he has to deal with the local authorities, his audience happens upon his work, and that the pieces change with human and natural interactions.

Illusion of Separateness report

m.i. was unable to attend the Illusion of Separateness event, but fortunately friend and drama critic Eren Kim found the opportunity to check out the scene. Thanks a million to Eren for writing!
The Illusion of Separateness was held in a tiny community garden snugly squeezed between two buildings on the Lower East Side. Sadly, I missed the show due to train problems but arrived in time for the last performance on the billing. Set against a backdrop of leafy foliage, a white-clad performer moved in rhythm to the hypnotic beat and sounds of a meditative chant and trancelike music using various props such as a lit candle and pitchers of water. His dance appeared to be, in my mind, a modern interpretation about the spiritual connection between shamanism and elements of nature such as fire and water. The show ended sometime around midnight, either before or after, a calming, meditative soliloquy to an otherwise typical urban day.

As Seen on the Street: Men in Black

Six years after The Matrix was released, the all-black look finally seems to have made it into mainstream male wardrobes. m.i. has been noticing many men, not just the 20-something, art crowd, taking up the simple, classy look. Done well, the effect can range from smart-casual to important event dressiness. There is something about monochromatic color schemes that gives the impression of sophistication. Black, especially, seems to add an edge of mystery, intelligence, and sexiness.

There are a few pit-falls though. Mismatched blacks can be very awkward- textures and tones within black vary, and unless the contrasts are intentional, the combination can look somewhat cock-eyed. Also, black, contrary to commonly repeated “wisdom”, does get dirty and does show it. Lint is especially noticeable on black, and can break the most eye-intelligently constructed ensembles.
